The Zilog Z80 has turned 50

The Zilog Z80 processor launched 50 years ago in July 1976 and became extremely successful in 8-bit microcomputers, home computers, and industrial applications, creating a de facto hardware standard alongside the 8080 and 8085. It spawned many clones and was used in systems like the original GameBoy, with Zilog continuing to produce Z80-based microcontrollers for industrial use until discontinuing the original just two years ago. The author recounts designing and building a Z80 computer as a teenager after discovering the chip was still being sold.
