Stablecoins are quietly reshaping global payments infrastructure

← Editorial

For years, stablecoins were seen within crypto markets as a convenient on-ramp and off-ramp — a way to park funds without exiting into traditional finance. That narrative is shifting. As a CoinDesk analysis notes, stablecoins are now being adopted as B2B cross-border payment and treasury infrastructure, valued for speed, efficiency, and increasingly clear regulation. The real opportunity today may not be in speculative trading but in building a strong euro stablecoin market serving European businesses and financial institutions, provided liquidity and banking integration follow.

This quiet institutional turn was underscored today by Fireblocks, the crypto custody and stablecoin infrastructure firm, which denied an Axios report that Visa was in late-stage talks to acquire it for $2.5 billion. Even if the report was premature, the fact that such a deal was considered credible signals how seriously traditional payments players are evaluating stablecoin infrastructure. Bitwise has noted that financial advisors now favour stablecoins and tokenisation over Bitcoin in 2026, while DTCC and MoneyGram have launched their own stablecoin initiatives.

The shift matters beyond crypto enthusiasts. Stablecoins reduce the friction and cost of moving money across borders, which directly impacts remittances, trade finance, and access to dollar-denominated savings in economies with weak currencies. Europe, with clearer rules under MiCA, is well-positioned to become a hub for compliant stablecoin innovation. The challenge remains licensing costs, integration with legacy banking, and the risk that these tools become another layer of financial exclusion if not designed accessibly. The Quran reminds us that no deed is overlooked — and the same principle of accountability applies to financial systems. As stablecoins move from experiment to infrastructure, the question is not whether they will be used, but whether they will be built to serve people fairly.
