pnpm 12 is a stable rewrite in Rust that maintains full backward compatibility with pnpm 11's commands, flags, settings, and lockfile format. Key changes include treating Git dependencies as identities (resolving through canonical HTTPS URLs) and reporting unrecognized settings in pnpm-workspace.yaml as errors instead of silently ignoring them. The documentation covers both versions, and pnpm 12 is not yet the default install via npm.
