Record-breaking temperatures in Slovakia (42.2°C) and Austria (41.2°C) are part of a severe heatwave across Central Europe. Italy placed all 27 major cities on its highest heat alert, while low water levels in the Danube are reducing nuclear power plant output in Slovakia and Hungary and forcing cargo rerouting in Germany. Scientists warn that such extreme summer heat could become more common as Europe warms faster than the global average.
