A study of two dangerous glacial lakes in a transboundary Himalayan basin between Tibet and Nepal found that large rock or ice avalanches could trigger outburst floods with discharges over 15 times larger than previously observed, with warning times of only 5–11 minutes at the upstream town of Nyalam and 30 minutes at the border. Remedial measures to lower water levels at one lake would have little impact on such catastrophic events. The authors call for a comprehensive disaster risk management approach combining early warning systems, land use zoning, and local response capacity building to address current and future GLOF risks under a warming climate.
