Ruth Ellis, the last woman hanged in the UK, has been granted a posthumous conditional pardon after evidence showed she was a victim of domestic abuse and coercive control. The pardon recognizes that modern partial defences like loss of control or diminished responsibility could have reduced her 1955 murder conviction to manslaughter. Ellis's grandchildren brought the successful application, and the pardon was granted by King Charles on the advice of Justice Secretary David Lammy.
